What are the tasks of a fashion designer?
Becoming a fashion designer is a dream job for many people. They admire and emulate great designers such as Giorgio Armani, Karl Lagerfeld and Coco Chanel. But they usually don’t know how much work is behind it.
Surely you already know that fashion designers design clothes and fashion. But especially at the beginning of your career, you have to take care of much more. You have to know and choose the materials, create patterns and sew and make the clothes yourself. Of course, you also have to keep an eye on the costs without the quality suffering as a result. In addition, you have to think about how you set the prices for your collections and individual pieces.
The purchase of the necessary equipment is also expensive. Sewing machines, sewing accessories and others so you have to plan in your budget.
But that’s not all. In order to become known, you also have to take care of marketing and external communication. When you start out as a fashion designer, chances are nobody knows you. So you have to spend time and money to present yourself and your work and make a name for yourself in the fashion world. How to become a fashion designer?
You can achieve this through two different educational paths. On the one hand, you can do a fashion design course at a fashion school. This lasts two to three years and offers you the degree of “state-certified fashion designer” or an institute-internal fashion design certificate. Some fashion schools also offer the degree of “state-approved fashion designer”. Depending on the training and school, you can even do an apprenticeship as a tailor at the same time.
On the other hand, you can complete a well-founded course of study at an art college or university. This usually lasts six to eight semesters and includes internships and company projects. But you don’t necessarily have to complete a fashion design degree. A fashion design degree or costume design degree also qualifies you for the profession of fashion designer. Nevertheless, you have to meet some requirements for a fashion degree.
